Objective: Electrical Engineer to design, coordinate and execute the medium-voltage and high-voltage Air
Insulated Switchgear (AIS) and Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation projects in the 22 kV–400kV range with
an emphasis on project safety, cost, quality, and reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide engineering services during the proposal, design, and construction stages of AIS and GIS
substation projects, with strict adherence to the project contract.
2. Notify the project lead of any difficulties encountered in the engineering and design that may
adversely impact safety, reliability, quality, cost, or schedule of the project deliverables, and
provide recommendations for solutions.
3. Work with the project lead engineer to develop the Design Criteria and the Document
Deliverables list for the project.
4. Work with the project lead engineer to develop single line diagrams, layout & section drawings,
grounding systems and bills of materials specially for solar power plant of the substation design
packages.
5. Perform technical, cost savings, and constructability reviews of electro-mechanical design
packages from internal engineering, outsourced sub-contractor engineering, and equipment
factories.
6. Generate equipment specifications, monitor vendor technical compliance, and witness factory
acceptance testing as applicable.
7. Utilize knowledge of the International Electrical Safety Code to ensure that designs comply with
the required safety clearances.
8. Utilize knowledge of the relevant codes (IEC/IEEE/NEC) to ensure proper sizing Electrical
equipment for plant.
9. Provide construction, installation, and commissioning support.
Qualifications & Skills:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
min 10 years of substation design engineering experience.
Min 5 years with GIS substation experience
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, & Simulation software e.g. Grounding software
CYMGRD, CDEGs, Grid Study PSSE, ETAZ
Technical Competencies:
1. Experience in solar project for developing and reviewing construction-grade engineering packages
(single line diagrams, layout & section drawings, raceway systems, grounding systems) is
preferred
2. Experience in renewable energy (Solar & Wind) projects for performing substation studies and
analyses, including rigid bus analyses, grounding analyses, corona calculations, illumination
studies, lightning protection studies, and auxiliary power system studies is preferred
3. Ability to develop equipment specifications and review vendor documents to ensure technical
compliance.
4. Ability to clearly communicate with SWL and customer personnel, recognizing problematic
situations, and apply appropriate concepts to solve problems.
5. Knowledge of three-phase and single-phase encapsulated GIS substations, including Gas Insulated
Bus (GIB) and associated SF6 type terminations.
6. Experience with outdoor and indoor GIS applications.
7. Experience in high voltage power cable system design, including ampacity calculations, cable
pulling design, cable vault layouts, cable restraint design, and GIS sealing end/air termination
applications.
8. Awareness of the benefits and strengths of AIS vs. GIS substations as they relate to reliability,
space savings, safety, maintenance, security, aesthetics, life-cycle costs, etc. Good understanding
of the necessary building infrastructure to support GIS (e.g. wall penetrations, embedded steel
supports, overhead cranes, maintenance access, SF6 reclaimers, etc.).
